It was difficult to tell who enjoyed themselves more, the audience or the choir, when Newquay Male Voice Choir dusted off the post Christmas and New Year cobwebs and enthusiastically threw themselves into their first performance of 2015.  It took place at the Hotel Victoria last Saturday when the choir performed during a charity evening in aid of Newquay United Reform Church Soup Kitchen and the Huer’s Hut Maintenance Fund.  Newquay MVC, Judith Pinguey, ably supported by the choir’s assistant MD and accompanist, Chris Bennett, took the choir through a parade of their liveliest numbers, including old favourites, Blue Moon and Alexander’s Ragtime Band, interspersed with newer and more sensitive pieces such as The Water Of Tyne and You Are So Beautiful.  Andrew Collins took the solo lead in Let There Be Peace On Earth while Justin Kelly and Tony Mills provided a duet in The Song of Cornwall.  Steve Howarth gave a wonderfully understated performance of Neil Diamond’s Love On The Rocks while, later in the evening, Bill Oates lent his beautifully mellow bass tones to his version of Gershwin’s It Ain’t Necessarily So from Porgy and Bess.  All in all it was a very relaxed and enjoyable evening raising funds for two very worthwhile charities.  As they say these days, What’s not to like!

So the choir are up and running in 2015.  Their next performance will be in St Michael’s Church at 2.30pm on Saturday, 28th February where they will be joined by Huntingdon MVC, from Cambridgeshire, St Stythians MVC and Trenance Learning Academy Choir in a concert launching the Cornwall International Male Voice Choral Festival to be held in the Duchy over the May Bank Holiday weekend.  Tickets for this concert are priced at £8 each, obtainable from 01726 66790.

The choir are also delighted to be contributing to Newquay’s St Piran 2015 celebrations.  They will be singing at the St Piran’s Eve service to be held in St Columb Minor Church at 6.45pm on Wednesday, 4th March, on the Killacourt at about 4.30pm on 5th March and at Newquay Rowing Club at about 7.30pm, also on the 5th March.

If you made a New Year’s resolution to get healthier and/or to try something different (and you are a man) it’s about time that you contacted the choir.  Give the Secretary, David Bendall, a ring on 01726 860193.  Gareth Malone has shown that anyone can sing!
